Naughty Dog has revealed that Ellie will have an NPC companion in The Last of Us: Part II, but isn't revealing their identity just yet.

The Santa Monica outfit recently revealed that the potty-mouthed heroine will be the only playable character in the game, although at the time it wasn't known if she'd be joined by anyone else on her journey.

Now, speaking with BuzzFeed, The Last of Us: Part II director Neil Druckmann has revealed that Ellie won't be on her lonesome for at least part of the game.

'Well, so, Ellie used to be an NPC, but she’s the protagonist in this story, so the player is controlling Ellie. It’s safe to say with the game that we made in the past that there will be some NPC with you in this story, even though we’re not showing [the NPC] in this demo,' said Druckmann.

The Last of Us of course starred moody hero Joel as the main protagonist, with the AI controlling Ellie in a supporting role. However, later in the game players could briefly take control of Ellie while Joel was incapacitated.

Speaking of Joel, we haven't really seen much of him at all in The Last of Us: Part II. He's only appeared briefly in the teaser trailer, and even then we didn't really get to see him properly. Is he dead? Is he hurt? Has he retired from zombie-killing to mow the lawn? Who knows.

The Last of Us: Part II has yet to attract a release date.
