Discussions about the PS4 Pro, Sony’s 4K capable mid-cycle PS4 refresh, began at Sony right as the original PS4 shipped, but it was only once the platform holder realised the benefits the system would offer to regular HD TVs that the project became a must, system architect Mark Cerny has revealed.

“We actually started thinking about the new console pretty much as soon as PlayStation 4 shipped,” explained Cerny in a video interview with PlayStation Blog. “It was clear that during this generation 4k TV penetration would become pretty significant at some point, and we wanted to see if we could get something out there in the market to support it.

“Once we realised that the increased processing power that was necessary for 4K could be used to make the graphics better on HDTV as well, the PS4 Pro simply became a must.”

Cerny says the PS4 Pro “game experience is enhanced in any number of ways with an ordinary HDTV”.
