A new super slim PlayStation 3 with a sliding lid has been announced by Sony, with a 500GB model due for release on September 28 alongside a FIFA 13 console and game bundle.

The new console design is considerably smaller than previous PS3 models. The internal volume and weight of the new PS3 is reduced by more than half compared to the very first PS3 model with a 60GB HDD, and by 20 per cent and 25 per cent respectively compared to the current PS3.

Head to our image gallery for a closer look at the console.

As well as the new 500GB model, a cheaper 12GB flash memory model will launch on October 12. Owners of the 12GB model will be able to expand their storage by connecting a five inch SATA internal hard drive or by purchasing an official PlayStation 250GB internal HDD. Existing slim PlayStation 3 models will be phased out.

Neither new model has been given a UK RRP, with Sony stating that this is dictated by "individual retailers themselves". Across Europe the 500GB FIFA 13 bundle will sell for around €299.99, while the 12GB model is priced €229.99 standalone.

Other bundles will be released in the coming months, with consumers able to buy a PS3 alongside Assassins Creed 3, and Wonderbook: Book of Spells.

A new vertical stand will also be released for the new PS3, bringing back memories of the stand released for the PlayStation 2.

You can use a USB Stick or even a Lan cable between 2 PS3s and copy everything across. My 300GB of data took 2 days even by LAN cable though.

It is! I'm still less than halfway through mine and it has been running solid for a couple of days now!

Yeah, that's kinda what i was thinking of doing but re-downloading all those games will be a bitch!
EDIT: Just found a samsung 2.5" sata 1TB hard drive for £66.80. Seems like a good price so i'm gonna go for that one i think, sorry Sony but you can keep your new slimmer model. More gb are more important to me than design.

If you're a PSplus member then all your game saves should be on your cloud storage - so you can just re download all your games etc again - time consuming I know, but certainly cheaper than buying an external HDD just for copying your content over.

That is pretty simple, thanks for posting that video its made my mind up. The only thing is i don't own a external hdd, would it be possible to do it without one if i own a second ps3 by copying data over and then back again when the new hdd is in place. (second ps3 is broken as it will not take discs but everything else works fine, i use it for streaming movies etc)

Yeah as Guydeman said but I used an external hard drive to back it all up personally.

It's really easy mate. You can transfer your Data but you will need an empty external hardrive that is formatted to FAT32 to be able to transfer everything from your PS3 onto it just using the USB ports on the front - the actually change of HDD is simple - it's just 5 small screws.
You need to get a 2.5" SATA HDD

Here's a vieo showing how simple it is mate.

Yeah I mainly upgraded because of PSN+ personally but could very easily just uninstall games etc.

Also felt I could use the PS3 as a media centre when I'm done with it as a console but I think getting an upgrade for Vita is more vital.

Cheapest I could find a 1TB at the time was just a little bit dearer - £79 if I remember right, but with forking out £60 on the stupid Vita card I just couldn't bring myself to spend £140 in one go. I will see how I get on with the 500 and will possibly look at upgrading again in the future if I need to - the 500gb is still over treble the 160gb I had before so I'm happy enough for now :0)

Even cheaper still :0)

(I was gona go with a 1TB but I also needed to get a 32gb card for my Vita and I could only bring myself to spend so much money on memory in one month!)

Just pop a 500gb HDD in your existing PS3 for £39.99 - it's what I did! Infact you'll probably get £15-£20 if you sell your 250gb HDD after, which means a 500gb model for £25 :0)

Nice, id like to see a shot with sliding lid open though.
I wouldn't mind a 500gb model but my 250gb will have to do, the next console i spend that much on will hopefully be next gen. I say hopefully in case my ps3/360 checks out early
