According to the latest issue of Famitsu Weekly, Gran Turismo HD is to be released for the PlayStation 3, but will be a barebones only title, with new content to be made available online.
The magazine states that the game will abandon Gran Turismo 4’s single player game modes, and instead offer online play. More radical news is that the game will ship in barebones form, requiring gamers to purchase cars and tracks online. Cars are said to cost between 22 and 45 pence, with tracks anything from 90 pence to £2.25. In total 750 cars and 50 tracks will be available, some being released in limited numbers. The game’s photo mode might also be offered as a download.
As part of the package players will get a glimpse of the all-new Gran Turismo 5. GT5 won’t arrive until 2008, but much like with the Gran Turismo 4 Prologue release, gamers will get to sample the goods much earlier than that. The Gran Turismo 5 sample will include two tracks and 30 cars, and you’ll be able to use any car on either track from the off.
There’s no word yet on whether or not Gran Turismo HD will be released outside of Japan, but we hope some more info will be released by Sony during the Tokyo Game Show. We’ll keep you posted.
