Nintendo has called the latest Super Smash Bros. Brawl EU release date rumour “purely speculative”.

The news will dash the hopes of Wii owners across Europe who have been waiting for an official SSBB release date confirmation from Nintendo for what seems like an absolute age. The game was released in Japan late last month, where it sold an astonishing 820,000 copies in its first week and is set to hit US shelves on March 9.

The latest release date rumour originated from a Dutch gaming website called gamercc.com which claims a June 6 release date has been confirmed by Nintendo at the Macromania Games Awards in France.

However, speaking to VideoGamer.com this morning, Nintendo UK quashed the suggested release date, saying: “This is a rumour and purely speculative. Nintendo is yet to confirm any release dates for Smash Bros.”

Late last month Nintendo told us that a June 1 release was “unlikely” despite the date appearing briefly on Nintendo’s official UK website.

Here’s hoping we don’t have to wait too long for news on SSBB, a game that is sure to fly off the shelves when it’s released, whenever that is.
