Two of this year's biggest titles have seen a huge decline in opening week sales compared to previous releases, MCV has revealed.

The site reports that sales of Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag were down 60 per cent on last year's Assassin's Creed 3, with sales of Battlefield 4 falling 69 per cent compared to 2011's Battlefield 3.

It also states that first week sales of FIFA 14 were down 24 per cent over last year's FIFA 13.

Sales of Call of Duty: Ghosts are also expected to have fallen over 2012's Call of Duty: Black Ops 2.

Though the fall in sales is partly to be expected given the imminent arrival of next-gen consoles, there's still uncertainty over whether sales will meet those of previous releases even when the consoles finally arrive.

"We've never had two must-have consoles launched so close together," Dorian Bloch, director at GfK Chart-Track told MCV. "The unquantifiable question is, how many consumers are waiting on these franchises for a few more weeks?

"How many PS4s and Xbox Ones will have sold by Christmas? I would say, let the dust settle on 2013 and then we will know more."

Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag entered this week's chart at No.1 with Battlefield 4 following in second place. Call of Duty: Ghosts is expected to take the top spot next week.

Xbox One is the first next-gen console to arrive in the UK, launching on November 22, with PlayStation 4 following one week later on November 29.

I can't speak for anyone else, but every single console player I know has stopped buying 360/PS3 games now that GTA5 is out.

That was the last hurrah for the current generation of consoles.

Those I talk to are just tired of how long this last generation was and are more than ready to move on. Every single one of them is getting either an XBone or a PS4 this Christmas, with a very strong leaning towards the PS4.

As usual, YMMV.

Whilst the assumption, that people are just waiting for the new consoles to come out, is true, I think we have to remember that the majority people won't just migrate to the next gen consoles over (launch) night.

Even if the PS4 and XB1 sell over 10 million copies between them in the Christmas period, that is still just a fraction of the install base of this generation of consoles. Yes a sizeable chunk of people will be waiting for the next gen to come out before buying battlefield/AC 4, however I don't think it would account for a 60% drop. If it were a 30% drop maybe, but for 60% drop there must be more then just the single reason of the next gen is coming.

I remember waiting with baited breath for Assassin's Creed 2 but there have been so many since then that they're all a bit samey, so that's my excuse.

BF4 just isn't my genre, sorry DICE, not your fault.

I'm glad people aren't just mindlessly buying them, need to show these developers and publishers that consumers aren't stupid and do have a tipping point when games aren't becoming noticeably better.

I am waiting for PS4 to get both of these games. New consoles is probably the key factor.

It has to be the consoles driving it down that much. Last year there was no question in the back of peoples minds as to what they wanted their game on, it was either a console or the PC. This year you've got the PC option still and it looks great, but if you're planning to get a new console you'll likely hold off and pick up those games on your new machine.

Probably the launch of the consoles is having a big impact on the sales, but I think that there is even some fatigue in many of these yearly series.
