Splatoon will release in Europe on May 29 exclusively on Wii U, Nintendo has announced.

The colourful team-based shooter introduces a unique twist to the genre, featuring a variety of single-player and online modes and tasking players with painting the environment in their team’s coloured ink.

A new ‘Ranked Battle’ mode will also rank and match players with other similarly-skilled players, while ‘Battle Dojo’ allows two players to go 1v1 in a local multiplayer match, with one player using the screen on the Wii U GamePad and the other using the TV to pop as many balloons as they can.

A range of Splatoon Amiibos will also be available, including Inkling Boy, Inkling Girl and a special Inkling Squid that will only be available to purchase in an exclusive Splatoon software bundle.

Tapping one of the three Amiibos onto the Wii U GamePad unlocks new missions where players can receive new weapons and gear.
