Evolution Studios has developed a prototype version of DriveClub for PlayStation VR, Eurogamer reports.

The site was given hands-on with the VR demo at Paris Games Week, reporting that it runs at 60fps – twice the speed of the standard version of DriveClub – but with “some trackside detail and the nuances of the weather and cloud system being dialled back”.

Car count has been cut from 12 to 8 in the VR demo, too, the site states, with rear-view mirrors also disabled, although the game’s native 1080p resolution isn’t said to have been affected.

For the time being, however, DriveClub VR is “just a prototype”, game director Paul Rustchynsky says. “We don’t know what we’re going to do with [it] just yet,” he told the site. “If it gets good reception here – which I think it will – I think that could turn into something more than just a tech demo.”

DriveClub Bikes, a new standalone expansion that introduces superbikes to the DriveClub universe, released on PlayStation Store yesterday. But Evolution also has plans to release “more content, more updates and more features” for the racer over the course of the next six months, Rustchynsky says.

PlayStation VR, meanwhile, is due for release on PlayStation 4 next year.

UPDATE: Sony’s head of worldwide studios Shuhei Yoshida has confirmed that the VR demo “runs at 60fps but gets converted to 120fps with reprojection before sent to the VR headset”.
