Xbox One’s system software – the software used to power the console’s three operating systems – requires “a significant amount of storage” space available on the console’s 500GB HDD.

The news was hidden in a footnote on the console’s fact sheet, which stated that “Xbox One system software uses a significant amount of storage; less internal storage will be available to users”.

Each Xbox One will ship with a 500GB internal hard drive, which Microsoft states (via Engadget) will not be replaceable.

To make up for it, however, the console will include support for external USB-powered hard drives, which can be used “for everything the internal storage can be used for”, including game installations and downloads.

Storage space could become a problem for Xbox One users, which allegedly requires each game to be installed to the hard drive. And given the Blu-ray support included in the next-gen consoles, game installation sizes will likely be far larger than those on Xbox 360.

Xbox 360 installs typically require around 6GB per retail game.
