According to horror movie website Bloody Disgusting, Warner Bros. Pictures is looking to remake the 1995 action flick with up-and-coming scribe Oren Uziel rumoured to be in talks to pen the screenplay.

Uziel’s Shimmer Lake made the 2009 black list – a collection of the best unproduced screenplays around Hollywood.

The Mortal Kombat franchise was created by Ed Boon and John Tobias, with the first game appearing in arcades back in 1992. The game stood out from the crowd thanks to its digitised sprites and plentiful blood and gore.

The franchise is now in the hands of Warner Bros. Interactive, having purchased the property from Midway Games last year. Mortal Kombat 9 is in development at Warner Bros. Games’ Chicago Studio – Ed Boon remains in charge of the project.
