Sir David Attenborough is working on a new nature documentary designed to be viewed using virtual reality headset Oculus Rift.

The programme, titled ‘Conquest of the Skies’, is currently being filmed by Atlantic Productions and is said to immerse viewers in a full 360 degree view of Borneo.

“We’re now filming for the Oculus Rift,” Atlantic’s commercial director John Morris told realscreen, “so when we filmed our recent flight in Borneo, we filmed with an eight-camera rig, so you got the full 360° experience.”

Morris likens the new technology “to the beginning of the film industry” and says that he expects to see “millions” of Rift’s to sell.

Facebook announced that it was to acquire Oculus VR for $2bn last month, and while the device will continue to be used within the gaming space, Facebook has plans to extend its use into communications, education, media and entertainment.

It isn’t yet clear when or how the programme will be broadcast.
