A new game in the Sonic Boom franchise is heading to Nintendo 3DS this winter, Nintendo has announced.

Developed by Sanzaru Games, Sonic Boom: Fire & Ice sees Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy and Sticks heading out on a brand new single-player adventure to defeat Dr. Eggman and an all-new super villain called D-Fekt.

As the name implies, fire and ice will play a major role in the game, with new abilities allowing characters to pull off special moves within the environment. Fire & Ice will also allow players to “run through the game at top speed, or take their time with deeper exploration and puzzle play”, and challenge their friends with a new Bot Racing feature.

“New to the title is the introduction of Bot Racing, a supplemental game tied to the single player story with multiplayer gameplay,” says Nintendo. “The new Bot Racing feature is an extension of Sonic Boom: Fire & Ice that is purely about racing and speed, where a user will unlock character themed Bots to challenge friends on fast courses or tracks.”

Sanzaru developed last year’s 3DS platformer Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal, which was marginally better received than Wii U disaster Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric.

Fire & Ice also forms part of a new distribution agreement between SEGA and Nintendo that sees Nintendo taking responsibility of the game’s sales, marketing and distribution. SEGA, meanwhile, will remain as publisher.

It isn’t clear whether any future unannounced Sonic titles will also fall under the same agreement.
