Development of Ryse 2 at Crytek was cancelled back in February, reports Kotaku.

Three employees have told Kotaku that Crytek’s work on the game was cancelled after a dispute with Microsoft over who owned the intellectual rights to the franchise.

The sources added that Microsoft is no longer sending Crytek cheques and in March employees at the Frankfurt studio weren’t paid.

Microsoft said it has “nothing to announce about the future of the franchise at this time,” which certainly leaves an opening for the series to return, perhaps at a new studio.

Ryse was considered by many to be the Xbox One’s most visually impressive launch games, showcasing what the console was capable of and rivalling the graphical capabilities of PS4. Whether or not Microsoft can or indeed chooses to continue with the franchise remains to be seen.
