Quantum Break was pushed back to 2016 to help stagger out Xbox One’s AAA releases, not because of any hold-ups in production, creative director Sam Lake has revealed.

Speaking to MCV, Lake explained that the delay actually “came from Microsoft’s end. It was looking at its portfolio of upcoming games and were feeling that it would be foolish to have all of these bigger games come out at the same time, essentially fighting among themselves for the audience. So it wanted to stagger them out.”

First revealed in May 2013, Quantum Break had originally been scheduled to launch last year. In April 2015, however, Microsoft announced that it would be pushing the game into 2016, while highlighting the number of exclusives it had coming to the console later that year. One of them was the now-cancelled Fable Legends.

Remedy was “more than happy” to take the additional time, though, Lake says, which it used to apply an even “higher level of polish”.

“Certainly we were happy to take the extra time and really happy to have that extra time as these are really challenging, complicated projects always,” he said. “In a big game like this, the polish phase is absolutely essential. We were more than happy to take the extra time. That mainly resulted in much a higher level of polish and iteration and fine-tuning of the experience.”

Quantum Break finally launches on Xbox One and PC next Tuesday, April 5. But has it been worth the wait? Check out what we thought of it in our review.
