Halo 4 will be released worldwide on November 6, 2012, Microsoft and 343 Industries have announced.

The November date is a departure from the franchise’s typical September debut, which is now likely to place the game in direct competition with fellow FPS giants Call of Duty and Medal of Honor.

Set four years after the events in Halo 3, Master Chief returns to confront his destiny and face an ancient evil that threatens the fate of the entire universe. The game marks a new beginning for the franchise under the development of 343 Industries.

“We are beginning a new saga with Halo 4 and embarking on a journey that will encompass the next decade of Halo games and experiences,” said Phil Spencer, corporate vice president of Microsoft Studios. “Millions of fans worldwide have been eagerly awaiting the opportunity to step back into the boots of Master Chief, and with Halo 4 leading the charge, we’re confident 2012 will be the most successful year in Xbox history.”

Whilst the November 6 date would appear to be treading on the considerable toes of this year’s Call of Duty, given the importance of both Halo and Call of Duty for Xbox you’d have to assume Microsoft has been in discussions with Activision over release timing. Does this mean Call of Duty will appear a week later on November 13?
