A next-generation version of Dead Island could be announced as early as this year, publisher Deep Silver has suggested.

Speaking with VideoGamer.com about the publisher’s plans for the franchise beyond Dead Island: Riptide, including the potential for a next-generation sequel, Deep Silver’s creative director Guido Eickmeyer said:

“Well, it would be surprising to shut down a franchise after such an outstanding

success. What I can tell you at this point: There will be a lot of exciting news for our

fans this year.”

Deep Silver is the latest publisher/developer to hint at an imminent reveal of its next-generation titles.

Last month, Killzone developer Guerrilla Games said that it was “gearing up” for 2013 to be its biggest year “since [it] released the original Killzone”, prompting speculation that the studio was set to announce a next-generation title in its FPS series.

Alan Wake creator Remedy and Just Cause developer Avalanche Studios are also expected to reveal their latest titles this year, both of which are expected to be next-gen titles.

The latest rumours suggest that both Microsoft and Sony will announce their next-generation consoles in March, although Sony seems willing to let Microsoft play its cards first.
