Microsoft has announced Xbox SmartGlass, a brand new application due for release this autumn that lets you control your Xbox 360 via your existing tablet and smartphone.
Similar to Nintendo’s Wii U Game Pad, the SmartGlass lets you interact with game content via a secondary screen, with additional information being displayed on a tablet.
Demos of Halo 4 and Madden NFL 13 using SmartGlass were shown. Halo 4 used a bespoke edition of Halo Waypoint to display additional information to the gameplay experience.
In addition, Microsoft calls SmartGlass “an intelligent companion” that helps keep you immersed while watching films or TV shows.
Information about the TV show or film that you’re watching will be streamed directly to your tablet.
Perhaps of most interest is confirmation of Internet Explorer coming to Xbox 360 this autumn, bringing the complete web experience to your console. SmartGlass support means you can browse with ease using a smart device.
Xbox SmartGlass is compatible with Windows 8 tablets and PCs. Information regarding an iOS release was not revealed.
