In Starfield, Surveying is a skill in the Science category. By levelling up this skill, players can upgrade their hand scanner, improving the range and adding a zoom function when exploring alien worlds. As a Novice-tier skill, it is available from the beginning of the game, though later ranks are locked behind challenges.
Surveying skill ranks

| Rank 1 | Adds an optional zoom to the hand scanner, and scan distance is increased to 20 meters. | Use the hand scanner to scan 10 unique resources, flora, or fauna. |
| Rank 2 | Adds another level of zoom to the hand scanner, and scan distance is increased to 30 meters. | Use the hand scanner to scan 25 unique resources, flora, or fauna. |
| Rank 3 | Adds another level of zoom to the hand scanner, and scan distance is increased to 40 meters. | Use the hand scanner to scan 50 unique resources, flora, or fauna. |
