In an interview with the Japanese magazine Famitsu, partially translated by Gamespot.com, Sony Computer Entertainment development boss Izumi Kawanishi has revealed Sony’s wishes to bring audio and video messaging to the PSP.

We’re currently considering [the implementation of an e-mail system], but we want to think over the fundamental concept behind e-mail,” said Kawanishi. “We think it would be great if people could communicate together with the use of video and voice.

Audio and video messaging is something that won’t be possible on the PSP in its current form so a camera and microphone peripheral would have to be created for use with the handheld. Once we bring a camera into the equation we open up the possibility of EyeToy like games on the PSP. These, however, would have to play very differently on the PSP as all the camera is going to be able to see is your face.

A whole range of games that control using your face could make their way onto the handheld system. Perhaps a game where you have to defeat enemies by eating them with your mouth or battering them with a blink of an eye.
