Top Fighting Games of 2014

Fighting Games are not to be confused with beat 'em-ups, with the former being your Street Fighters, Tekkens and Mortal Kombats, and the latter encompassing the likes of Final Fight, Streets of Rage and Double Dragon. Purists will shoot you down for calling Street Fighter II a beat 'em-up. I hope that’s clear.

The Fighting game genre burst back onto the scene with Street Fighter 4 in 2009, and it's a game still going strong today thanks to the 2014 launch of Ultra Street Fighter 4 which bumped the playable fighter roster up to an impressive 44.

Nintendo also has its own fighting game set for 2014 in Super Smash Bros, coming first to 3DS and later Wii U. Some will argue the game doesn't deserve to be in the same bracket as the Street Fighters of the world, but the game is now recognised by the Evo 2014 Championship Series alongside Microsoft's Killer Instinct reboot, Bandai Namco's long-running Tekken and Arc System Works' BlazBlue.
