Joystiq reports that ambitious sounding FPS, The Crossing, from Arkane Studios and Valve has been put on hold.

The game was first revealed over two years ago, but with the involved parties going very quiet on the project the signs were ominous. After a bit of poking around, Joystiq heard back from Arkane Studios.

“We ran into an unexpected financial challenge some months ago and we had to put The Crossing on hold,” Raphael Colantonio, CEO and creative director of Arkane Studios, told the gaming blog. “Since then, we shifted our efforts to other very good projects.”

These other projects are reported to be an FPS RPG and a casual strategy game from Harvey Smith for the iPhone.

The Crossing was billed as a blend of multiplayer and single-player gaming, replacing traditional AI with real players and adding consequence and meaning to multiplayer. It all sounded rather good.
