If you’re wondering if the PSVR 2 is multiplayer – the short answer is yes, sort of, and also no.

PSVR 2 is releasing today! However, after our glowing review, there are still a few questions yet which need answering before buying the VR headset.

The PSVR 2 does not have local multiplayer capabilities, which is not a surprise. Fitting two heads in the same headset is impossible, and, as per the PlayStation FAQ, you also can’t connect two PSVR 2 headsets to the same console.

The PSVR 2 can connect to the internet, though the possibility of online multiplayer games is entirely down to the individual game developers. For example, Gran Turismo 7 is a game we would expect to have online multiplayer capabilities, however nowhere in the PSVR 2’s data sheets does it mention online compatibility, only online updates and downloads.

Is PSVR 2 multiplayer?

If you’re playing regular PS5 games using the PSVR 2 as your display, of course those games will be multiplayer in VR, however until the console officially releases we’re not going to know if there’s online multiplayer.

In light of that, and if the PSVR 2 doesn’t have local multiplayer, do we think it will ever have this capability?

Will the PSVR 2 ever have local multiplayer?

According to Game Rant, the PSVR 2 could eventually have local multiplayer. This conclusion was drawn after a patent filled by Sony seemed to suggest that the PSVR 2 could, at some point, support local multiplayer.

The above image indicates Sony’s current stance on local multiplayer, however the patent could certainly be an insurance for a future update that enabled two headsets to function on a single console.

As far as we know, none of the launch titles for the PSVR 2 will support local multiplayer, likely as it’s not a supported feature yet.

That said, the following image is a diagram taken from the patent.

The image displays two gamers, each with a VR headset, connected to the same console. This prototype idea indicates a possible local multiplayer, however it’s not looking likely at the moment.

Essentially, the PSVR 2 device itself is not multiplayer. There’s games that will be able to run on the PS5 as multiplayer games, though these are not VR games. It seems as though a few games will have online multiplayer games, but the complete lack of local multiplayer means that the PSVR 2 console itself does not have full multiplayer capabilities.
