If you’re wondering if Hogwarts Legacy supports ray-tracing – take a look at what we’ve found.

Ray-tracing is a process that simulates real-life light in games, and it’s usually a process that the graphics card handles. It’s quite an intensive process, and only mid-range to premium level graphics cards can make use of it.

Nvidia pioneered ray tracing with their RTX-series graphics cards, though AMD soon followed with Radeon RX. This advancement in graphical technology was quite some time ago, though, and now that we’re in 2023 with the release of Hogwarts Legacy impending (at the time of writing), it’s important that we ask if the game even supports it.

How to turn ray-tracing on and off in Hogwarts Legacy

In short, Hogwarts Legacy does support ray-tracing. You can enable it in Settings and heading over to Graphics Options. From there, you can scroll down and toggle Ray Tracing Reflections, Ray Tracing Shadows, and Ray tracing ambient occlusion. You can also change the quality of ray-tracing between performance modes and fidelity options.

However, as mentioned before, it’s an incredibly intensive process best suited to the best GPUs for ray-tracing. Many people have actually encountered problems when using ray-tracing.

For example, there’s a few issues with pop-in shadows due to the low render distance of ray-tracing shadows. For an open world game, this can be extremely off-putting in some instances.

Similarly, Hogwarts Legacy’s ray-tracing ambient occlusion doesn’t quite function properly, so objects can have very uncanny depth and shadows.
