The Bombergames remake of SEGA’s Streets of Rage has hit a rather expected stumbling block: SEGA.

After eight years in development fans were thrilled to see the remake finally be released, but the joy has been short-lived. SEGA has contacted the developer to have the game removed from download.

“SEGA have contacted regarding the download hosted on this site,” said a post on the game’s forum. “While this issue is being resolved, please do not upload the game for others to download. Any links posted on this site will be removed. Thank you.”

SEGA Europe contacted Kotaku with the following statement on the matter:

“SEGA is committed to supporting any fans that take an interest in our games, and where possible we do so by involving them in Beta tests and other development, marketing or research opportunities. However we need to protect our intellectual property rights and this may result in us requesting that our fans remove online imagery, videos or games in some instances.”

It’s a shame that the remake has been pulled, but as with all projects of this nature it was surely only a matter of time. Having played the game last week, Bombergames did a great job and it’s unfortunate more people won’t be able to see the fruits of its eight years of labour.
