Killer Is Dead has gotten off to a poor start in Japan, selling just over 17,000 copies during its first week on sale.

The PS3 version of Suda 51’s latest hack & slash debuted at no.5 in the Media Create Charts (via GameSpot) selling 17,709 units, with the Xbox 360 version following at no.36. Xbox 360 sales figures have not been revealed but are expected to be significantly less.

In comparison to Suda’s last release, Lollipop Chainsaw, Killer Is Dead appears to have flopped considerably.

The PS3 and Xbox 360 versions of Lollipop Chainsaw sold 53,347 and 14,422 units respectively in Japan during the game’s opening week, pinning reported Killer Is Dead sales at less than a third of Suda’s previous title.

Killer Is Dead launches in the UK on August 30.
