A PS3 price cut could take place before April 2008, according to hints from Sony’s senior vice president.
In an interview with the New York Times, Takao Yuhara didn’t rule out cutting the cost of the expensive next machine as part of the corporation’s plans to stop making a financial loss in its games division by the end of the next financial year (March 2008).
He declined to confirm anything concrete, particularly on when such a price drop could occur, but stressed: “We may look at the price as part of our strategy to expand the market when the time is right.”
The news follows a hefty 15% tumble in Sony’s operating profits over the last financial quarter, blamed on the high costs of producing the Blu-ray drive-equipped PS3 and the expensive launches in America and Japan.
The PlayStation 3 launches in the UK and Europe on March 23, priced (for now) at £425.
