Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn has become the latest online title to be hit by major server issues at launch, with many users left unable to log in to the game.

Pre-order customers were offered access to the updated version of 2010’s underwhelming MMORPG this weekend, ahead of the game’s official launch this Tuesday, August 27.

But many European and North American users have reported problems when attempting to log in to the game, prompting producer and director Naoki Yoshida to issue an apology to frustrated fans.

After an issue with the game’s instances yesterday, many players are now receiving error 1017: an error message notifying them that “The World is currently full. Please wait until an opening is available and try again.”

Square Enix has also limited access to the game’s character creation, stopping players from being able to create a new character, and launched multiple emergency maintenance sessions, taking the game offline for hours at a time.

“The maximum expected population limit is nearing for each World, and unless the current World simultaneous connection amount decreases, we are unable to open release the limitation,” wrote Yoshida on the game’s official forum.

“In case we do release the limitation, there is a high chance that the corresponding World will crash or cause issues, and we are thinking that it will be difficult for us to release it for a while. We please ask you to consider playing in a World that has a low limitation.

“We are sorry for any inconvenience that this may cause and ask to continue with your cooperation.”

A Realm Reborn has been through an extensive beta process, with multiple beta weekends hosted throughout the last few months.

The game officially launches on PlayStation 3 and PC this Tuesday, August 27, with a PlayStation 4 version set to follow next year.
