Nintendo’s big man at the top has denied the company is currently determined to become the industry leader, despite the runaway success of the Wii.
In an interview with IGN, Satoru Iwata said it was “not the case” that from this year on the company would be leading the console pack, with Microsoft and Sony trailing behind. He explained: “So long as we continue the fight against the lack of interest in games from the general consumer, Nintendo will always be the challenger.
“For example, one challenge is in developing software that keeps people from saying they’re no longer interested in swinging the Wiimote.”
The Wii has been flying off the shelves worldwide ever since it launched late last year, but Iwata is keeping a level head about the console’s future. “Any system will sell well following launch but there will definitely come a time where it will stop selling,” he added. “Even the DS hit a rough spell after selling 1.5 million units a month after launch.”
When the Wii launched in Europe last November, more than 325,000 consoles were shifted in just two days.
