Zenless Zone Zero is the latest free-to-play game from HoYoverse, the studio behind Genshin Impact and Honkai Star Rail. These games see you spend an in-game currency to pull on banners, which have a fixed chance to reward you with characters, and the aim is to get the coveted S-Rank Agents in Zenless Zone Zero.

Gacha games are basically glorified versions of gambling because you are convinced to spend money to get the characters you want. While you can earn plenty by playing the game and being a free-to-play (F2P) player, you can’t avoid this fact about gacha games.

Herein lies one of the biggest problems with gacha games and pulling for characters in general. Illustrated perfectly by a fan on the game’s subreddit, you can never guarantee that you will actually get the character you want. A post titled: “I wanted to try all the shiny new characters but hoyo said ‘You only get Grace. Every S rank you pull for the first week is Grace’, demonstrates the frustration shared by many ZZZ players and highlights how upsetting it can be to pull the same S-Rank character early on.

This is especially annoying when you want some team diversity in the early game, but you keep getting copies of the same character. The post has seen plenty of people replying, sharing in the frustration, with one Redditor claiming they are “On a similar train”, referring to the fact they’ve seemingly pulled Soldier 11 three times and no other S-Rank characters. “This is me too. sucks. I like 11 well enough but I’d like to play other characters too”, reads another comment.

This isn’t a problem when you get further in the game, but nothing can stifle your enjoyment more when you can’t get the characters you want. The post doesn’t just complain about getting two versions of Grace Howard but also claims to have gotten ‘seven Antons’, referring to an A-Rank character on the limited banner. The frequency of Anton’s appearance is also very relatable, with one person commenting “Why is everyone getting so many Antons lmao”.

Love it or hate it, this is sadly the reality you sign up for when you play gacha games. You never know how it’s going to go and even though the pity system is there to ensure you can ultimately get an S-Rank, nothing can ever save you from getting the same character more than once. We can attest to this, with our own luck being just as bad, if not worse. It’s a pain we know all too well, getting a Weapon from the Standard Banner when you just want a new character
