A YouTube app has been released for the Wii in the US, Google has announced.
The app’s release comes just days before the Wii successor, the Wii U, arrives in stores, itself also offering a YouTube app.
The Wii app looks pretty similar to the PS3 version, offering access to popular and trending videos, plus the ability to filter down into genres such as music and sports, and to search for content.
Brining YouTube to Wii wasn’t an easy task, as Google’s blog post reveals.
“When we began building the new YouTube app for Nintendo Wii, we wanted to make video playback smooth and beautiful. This meant squeezing the most available power from the console CPU and fitting the video decoding process within the tight bounds of available memory. After trying out several video encoding formats on Wii, we found that 360p WebM encoding performed the best. With the largest install base of current generation consoles, YouTube on Wii is the largest deployment of WebM video in the world today.”
The Next Web reports that the app will roll out in other territories in the months ahead.
Wii U launches in the UK on November 30.
