UPDATE: Xbox neXt is not the name - or codename - for a future Xbox console, but in fact an old internal team name associated with Xbox One, Microsoft has told IGN.

"Xbox neXt was an old internal team name for a group that worked on releasing Xbox One and is not related to a future console," a Microsoft spokesperson said. "We have nothing further to share."

NeXt may not be a new piece in the Xbox puzzle, but many onlookers will still be expecting Microsoft to make a new Xbox announcement at E3 in June.

ORIGINAL STORY: A visual designer at Xbox appears to be working on a new Xbox console, after a listing for the "Xbox neXt" was discovered on his profile.

Xbox next wider

The designer has been with Microsoft since 2006, working on Xbox since 2008.

While Xbox neXt is unlikely to be the name of the new Xbox, its inclusion on the designer's profile further strengthens the belief that Microsoft is readying a new and more powerful Xbox console, possibly to be revealed at E3 this summer.

Xbox boss Phil Spencer has openly discussed the idea of more powerful hardware being both forwards and backwards compatible with Xbox games - much like Apple's model for iPhones and iPads.

Only last week, Spencer talked about the possibility of a much more powerful Xbox console, rather than a smaller-step update.

"I don't know anything about any of the [PS4K] rumours that are out there," he said, "but I can understand other teams' motivations to do that. For us, our box is doing well. It performs, it's reliable, the servers are doing well. If we're going to go forward with anything, like I said, I want it to be a really substantial change for people - an upgrade."
