Microsoft will continue to release home video game consoles after the Xbox One, Microsoft Studios corporate VP Phil Spencer has said on Twitter.
Spencer was asked if the Xbox One would be the last console of its kind which Microsoft releases, suggesting local hardware would be less important in the next generation.
“I don’t. I think local compute will be important for a long time,” responded Spencer.
He added: “You can look at mobile, connected to faster networks, more cloud services but local power still increases each gen.”
“Bandwidth caps clearly an issue, still believe HW & SW engrs working together will find local HW scenarios critical.”
It seems that whilst cloud computing will continue to become more important for Microsoft, a local system of considerable computing power will also remain necessary.
Sony, however, may be thinking differently. PlayStation Now is a move away from powerful local hardware, with game services being streamed to all manner of devices.
