Xbox One will not require an always-on Internet connection to function, Microsoft has confirmed – but it will require connecting to the Internet at least once every 24 hours.
The console’s online requirement was discussed by Microsoft’s corporate vice president Phil Harrison last night, who told Kotaku that he believed users would have to connect Xbox One to the Internet once a day.
However, Microsoft later told Polygon that Harrison’s comments referred to a “potential scenario” and that it would not be confirming details of the console’s online requirements “today”.
It isn’t yet clear why Xbox One requires a connection to the Internet every 24 hours or what happens if it goes longer without being connected, but it’s presumably linked to some sort of DRM/authentication system.
Online requirements for Xbox One isn’t the only area where Microsoft has failed to offer a clear answer.
There’s still ongoing confusion over the console’s pre-owned policy, and whether users will be required to tie disc-based titles to their Xbox LIVE profile.
