The day one update for Xbox One will take "most users" around 15-20 minutes to download, Microsoft has said.

"We are optimizing Xbox One so that the day one update is as fast as possible," Xbox One chief platform architect Marc Whitten told IGN. "While we're still finalizing the details, we expect that the download will take between 15 and 20 minutes for most users."

The day one update is expected to contain the necessary firmware tweaks following Microsoft's decision to drop online restrictions and enable traditional playback of pre-owned software.

The size of the download has yet to be revealed, and it isn't clear from Whitten's comments whether the time frame factors in the entire installation process.

Xbox One launches in the UK on November 22.
