Chinese gaming titan Tencent has quickly grabbed a controlling stake in Wuthering Waves developer Kuro Games. With the game’s 2.0 release on the horizon alongside a PS5 port, the Chinese tech company is aiming for a big slice of the pie.
Tencent grabs controlling stake of Wuthering Waves
Reported by Chinese news outlet Youxiputao, Tencent already owned 13.4% of Wuthering Waves developer Kuro Games. However, the games publisher quickly purchased 37% of the company’s shares from Hero Entertainment to have a 51.4% ownership of the studio.
Via Youxiputao, an internal source at Kuro Games explained that Tencent isn’t planning to change the way the studio works. Similar to the company’s handling of Riot Games, Supercell and others, Tencent doesn’t want to interfere with Wuthering Waves’ development.

A leaked internal memo sent to Kuro Games staff explained that the studio’s “independent operations” won’t be affected by the recent change in ownership. Instead, the shift in shareholders should lead to a “more stable external environment”.
While not the huge success of Genshin Impact or Zenless Zone Zero, Wuthering Waves has raked in a tonne of money for Kuro Games. As 2.0 quickly arrives to shake up the game’s best team comps and add a host of new features to the open world gacha adventure, investors’ eyes are on the game even more than players’ are.
Despite gacha revenue decreasing in 2024 for WuWu and other big game such as Genshin Impact and Honkai Star Rail, there’s still a tonne of profit to be had within the video game genre. With Kuro Games’ popular gacha game making the jump to PlayStation 5 for the first time, there’s an entire new audience of players to nab, and it looks like Tencent are expecting a huge success.
