Larian Studios has left the world of Baldur’s Gate 3 behind to focus on two new games, presumably one being a Divinity title. However, Dungeons and Dragons owner Wizards of the Coast is planning to release more titles “as serious as BG3” without the studio following record-breaking sales of Larian’s entry.

While Dungeons and Dragons games have been vaguely successful over the decades, Baldur’s Gate 3 is by far the biggest game ever based on the IP. In the past, Wizards and Hasbro have claimed that they plan to “raise the bar” with future games projects based on BG3, but many fans are unconvinced.

Wizards wants to make RPGs as serious as BG3

Speaking to Polygon in a recent interview, Wizards of the Coast president John Hight revealed the company’s plans to make more games that hit the bar of quality that Larian set. At the time of writing, the company has numerous studios working on D&D titles, including a game by Star Wars Jedi director Stig Asmussen at new studio Giant Skull.

“Don’t get me wrong, we are going to do CRPGs that are going to be as serious as BG3,” Hight told the outlet.

Hight discussed the aforementioned D&D game from Stig Asmussen, a single-player “action-adventure” game that doesn’t really sound like a dense CRPG. “I think about what Stig and Patrick Murphy did on God of War 3, taking that pantheon of both gods and the crazy monsters from mythology and bringing them to life. It’s like, wow, what if we could unleash them on D&D?” the president said.

Additionally, Hight explained that Wizards of the Coast wants to make sure that any future D&D game has to be an accurate representation of the franchise and match player expectations. “It’s really important that any manifestation of [D&D creatures] in a game be as good as what’s in out own minds,” he said. “That’s a tall order.”

Larian Studios’ work on Baldur’s Gate 3 has been a major inspiration for a number of developers since its release. The Witcher 4 studio CD Projekt Red has been inspired by the game for its upcoming RPG, and a new wave of CRPGs have been announced including The Expanse: Osiris Reborn from Owlcat.

At the time of writing, Wizards of the Coast has yet to confirm a true Baldur’s Gate 3 successor. However, an official Baldur’s Gate 4 without Larian Studios is expected to be greenlit by the company.
