Warhammer 40K Space Marine 2 PvP cross-play was deemed “unfair” for console, but Saber added it anyway

Saber Interactive’s Warhammer 40K Space Marine 2 has awesome cross-play functionality for PvE content. However, the game’s PvP function strictly kept PC and console players away from each other on launch.

Alongside commitment to years of additional updates for Space Marine 2 as the sequel enters development, Saber continues to improve the game with features that fans request.  

Space Marine 2 PvP crossplay is “unfair”

Speaking to Men’s Journal, via FandomWire, Saber Interactive Chief Creative Officer Tim Willits explained that cross-play is “important” for the game. However, the advantage that PC players have would make it worse for console players. 

“We believe that cross-play is very important to mainstream games like Space Marine 2 – Cross-play is, I believe for a big game, critical,” Willits explained. “For instance, I like to play on my super fast PC, but my friend has a PlayStation and we’re screwed otherwise, and then he’s got to go buy his $600 machine to play one video game together which is not gonna work.”

While Willits is right, cross-play PvP has become a much more prominent part of modern games. Games from The Finals to Call of Duty all have fully cross-play multiplayer with some allowing people to manually turn off the feature if they don’t want to use it. 

In a February update, Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2 finally added cross-play PvP to the game. Alongside FoV sliders, which were also turned down upon release, Saber’s willingness to change their minds to appease fans proves why they’re the right team for Space Marine 2.

At the end of the day, Operations is the main meat for the multiplayer of Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2, but that doesn’t mean that PvP should suffer. As the game gets older, player population will drop, and PvP cross-play will be essential to finding a full lobby. With more Operations in the works alongside a brand-new Horde Mode that aims to be vastly different from the original, the focus is clearly on PvE, but PvP is still a great part of the package.
