The latest update for Epic Games' Unreal Engine 4 has turned up a curious oddity in its list of supported platforms: Erebus.

Erebus is listed (via Resetera) alongside existing platforms including the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, and comes with the abbreviation TST2. Naturally, speculation has already spread like wildfire across the Internet, with many people believing Erebus is in fact PlayStation 5.

Why? Well, Erebus is the name for the Greek deity that is the embodiment of darkness, as well as the word used to describe an area of the Underworld where the dead travel. Sony has used Greek lingo as code names for its hardware in the past; the PS4 was known as Orbis, PS4 Pro was titled Neo, while PSVR was called Morpheus.

In addition, Erebus is also identified as the first of five beings in existence, born of Chaos. Yes, five. See where people are going with this?

Another screenshot of the Unreal Engine 4 update implies that the system will be crossplay compatible with existing hardware. VG247's sources seem to think it's an unannounced platform of some description, but not necessarily a Sony one.

Both the PS4 and Xbox One are turning five-years-old in November, so it's only natural that people are starting to talk about next-generation consoles. Sources speaking to Kotaku earlier this year suggested that Sony's next system is not likely to arrive until 2020.

At this point, I don't think I even need to say that we should take all this Erebus/PS5 stuff with a massive dose of salt. Still, it's kind of exciting, right?
