Wolfenstein: The New Order from MachineGames and Bethesda gets off to a great start with a No.1 chart position and the title of the second biggest debut of 2014, behind only Titanfall.

The FPS veteran accounted for a quarter of all entertainment software unit sales for the week, and is the first entry in the Wolfenstein franchise to claim the No.1 spot.

PS4 took 38 per cent of Wolfenstein sales, followed by the Xbox One which accounted for 31 per cent.

Minecraft: PS3 Edition climbed 49 per cent week-on-week to take second place ahead of EA’s FIFA 14 which is down two places to No.3. Titanfall also drops two spots to No.4, and 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil takes fifth.

Elsewhere Tropico 5 debuts at No.4 on the PC full price chart, whilst Goat Simulator takes 12th in the PC budget chart.

With Wolfenstein Bethesda has taken full advantage of the lull in next generation FPS titles, giving gamers exactly the kind of experience they were looking for. The game’s release was also just in time to avoid being trampled on by Ubisoft’s Watch Dogs, which is sure to shoot to the top of the All Formats chart next week with what we expect to be a new sales high for the year.

Also look out for a strong Top 5 spot for Nintendo’s Mario Kart 8, with a large percentage of Wii U owners sure to be picking up the acclaimed kart racer.
