Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 revealed its retro twist in a new trailer, in which ten events and the roster of characters will be rendered in their original 80’s and 90’s duds.

The ten 2D events are the 100m, 10m diving, 400m hurdles, vault, judo, 1000m kayak, long jump, marathon, shooting, and volleyball. 8-bit Mario and 16-bit Sonic competitors look literally hilarious, but it’s adorable to watch Bowser’s stubby, pixely legs go all out trying to reach the finish line. Judo is even more impressive; the rectangular characters just ping off of each other.

Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 is due out on Nintendo Switch on November 5. Watch the 2D event announcement trailer below.
