It looks as though the reported Gran Turismo movie is really happening, and there’s fresh details to boot.
Deadline has updated their original report from last month with some fresh details. They confirm that indeed, District 9’s Neill Blomkamp has been successfully brought on board to direct. In fact, Neill confirmed the news himself via his own Twitter account, retweeting a post from The Game Awards.
On top of that, we now also have a release date and the first plot details of the movie. It appears as though Sony are setting their sights on an August 11, 2023 release date for the film. Plot wise, Jason Hall is credited as being behind the screenplay and it’s apparently based on a true story. “The film is the ultimate wish fulfilment tale of a teenage Gran Turismo player whose gaming skills won a series of Nissan competitions to become an actual professional race car driver.”
It’s a pretty rapid turnaround, all being told. But PlayStation certainly haven’t been wasting their time translating their games into other mediums lately. We’ve got a Twisted Metal series on the way with Anthony Mackie, Neve Campbell, Stephanie Beatriz and Will Arnett. The Last of Us grows ever closer to launch on HBO, and there’s reportedly a God of War series coming to Amazon. Uncharted did very well at the box office, so PlayStation Productions are striking while the iron’s hot.
If the Gran Turismo movie can make sure it takes some cues from the games’ excellent soundtrack, they could be onto a winner. We’ll find out on August 11, 2023.
Now I get to combine my love of cars with love of film. Excited. https://t.co/naDLAWrrmZ
