Atari has announced that psychedelic arcade shooter Tempest 4000 will land on the Nintendo Switch & Atari VCS in March.

The game is a sequel to classic Atari arcade game Tempest from 1981. Keeping a similar wireframe aesthetic, but adding a ton of new features, the sequel brought the game to Xbox One and PlayStation 4 back in 2018. Now it’s the Nintendo Switch’s turn, and development is being handled by Llamasoft who’s headed up by legendary British video game designer Jeff Minter. Minter was actually responsible for original sequel Tempest 2000 on the Jaguar in 1994 too.

As for Tempest 4000, you’ll be taking down hordes of deadly creatures in space with your spaceship known as The Claw. You’ll get to play three game modes including Classic, Pure and Survival over more than 100 unique levels. Destroying enemies and ships gets you powerups, of course, and surviving bonus rounds will earn you upgrades for your craft.

Expect a thumping 1990s inspired soundtrack, and of course there’s support for online leaderboards to compare your scores with friends. Or even just all-important bragging rights. You can check out a trailer for the game for yourself down below. Tempest 4000 arrives on the Nintendo Switch and the Atari VCS on March 22, 2022.
