Japanese publisher, Tecmo has criticised Sony at a developers’ conference of allowing ambitions in the home appliances sector to cloud its future gaming vision.

When asked about the PlayStation 3, Tecmo president, Junji Nakamura said “the CPU was developed for a next-generation game machine, but the hardware is conceived by an appliance manufacturer…I feel they’re probably trying to use games as a way to increase their power in the home appliance industry”. Nakamura-san went on to say that Sony was probably allowing home appliance design decisions to interfere with the actual games system inside.

He went on to rub further salt in the wounds by saying that whilst Sony had been rather tight-lipped about the PS3, Microsoft had been very forthcoming with information about the Xbox 2. “There’s not much information from Sony” said the Tecmo big cheese, “The situation with Microsoft is very different”

Whilst releasing games predominantly on Sony’s machine, Tecmo have long been a supporter of the Xbox, releasing two of their biggest franchises, Ninja Gaiden and Dead or Alive exclusively on the Microsoft machine and it would appear that Microsoft are keen to keep that relationship going. The Xbox has not performed as well as Microsoft would have hoped in Japan and they will need publishers like Tecmo on-board if they want things to be different with Xbox 2.
