Nintendo's Super Smash Bros. series celebrates its 20th anniversary today, with the original game launching in Japan on January 21, 1999. Blimey, anyone else feel ancient? Just me? Damn.

To mark the series' birthday, Super Smash Bros. maestro Masahiro Sakurai posted a message on Twitter to fans, thanking gamers for their continued support. Nintendo also posted its own separate message to celebrate Smash's 20th birthday.

'Smash Bros. is 20 years old today! Over these 20 years, I’ve seen so many people enjoy this series in so many ways – at home, at hangouts, at conventions, even in business offices! Development has always been hard on me, but I’m supremely happy. Thank you so much for playing,' said Sakurai-san.

'Also on this day: the first “Super Smash Bros.” went on sale 20 years ago (on January 21st, 1999). It’s thanks to all of your loyal support that we’ve been able to keep this series going even today. Thank you so much!' added Ninty.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate was released on Nintendo Switch back in December, so be sure to read Rich's review here.
