Secret Base has lifted the wraps off Streets of Red: Devil’s Dare Deluxe, a new retro-inspired beat-’em-up that’s sort of like the love child between Streets of Rage and Hotline Miami.

However, the game doesn’t play pixel-for-pixel like Sega’s beloved 90s brawler, as Streets of Red combines a multitude of elements: It’s (take a deep breath) a permadeath horror multiplayer beat-’em-up. Phew.

Designed for players to have a crack at the action multiple times over, the game augments your hero with typical retro-flavoured powers as they duke it out with various undead-themed monsters across four stages. Six characters are up for grabs, while the combat system, though easy to learn, has a surprising amount of depth in order to fully master.

The permadeath feature however means that if you end up brown bread, your save data will also bite the dust. And that’s it: Game over, no continues. The good news is that you can fork out for upgrades and ‘soul tokens’ to revive yourself with by spending cash you earn through kills, although you must spend wisely or risk screwing yourself over.

Streets of Red: Devil’s Dare Deluxe is due out for PS4 and Switch on February 27. You can check out the trailer below, which features a wonderfully nostalgic recreation of Streets of Rage’s introduction sequence.Â
