Star Wars Battlefront's release date is not "directly tied" to the theatrical release of Star Wars: Episode VII, EA has said, suggesting that the upcoming shooter could release either side of next year's film.

"As it relates to Star Wars, we've shown parts from the game today, so you know that what we're building is more rooted in the traditional Star Wars universe and not so much necessarily linked to the movies being made," EA Studios EVP Patrick Soderlund told investors last night. "And that's just because we wanted to make a game that celebrated the history of Star Wars.

"Obviously there will be things in there that are somewhat tied to the new movie. I wouldn't say that we have a particular tie to the movie. Now, obviously we would prefer to be close to the movie, but I wouldn't say that [the release date is] directly tied to it."

Last year, EA said that it was aiming to release Star Wars Battlefront "around the same time as the Star Wars movies start to come out, probably in the summer of '15".

However, the film was later delayed to December 2015 leaving a release window for the game undetermined.

Star Wars Battlefront is currently in development at Battlefield studio DICE and promises to let players "fulfil [their] ultimate Star Wars battle fantasy".
