The troubled Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Remake might be with a new developer, if new reports are to be believed.

According to Bloomberg, development is no longer being lead by the Texas-based Aspyr Media studio. As per an anonymous “person familiar with the change” – development is now being led by Saber Interactive.

Specifically, they say, it’s been moved to one of Saber Interactive’s Eastern European studios. At the time of writing, the owners of both Aspyr and Saber Interactive – Embracer Group – haven’t commented on the report.

They did, however, seemingly allude to the change during an investor call last week. Last Thursday, the company gave a vague statement which didn’t identify The Old Republic directly.

“One of the Groups AAA projects has transitioned to another studio within the Group. This was done to ensure the quality bar is where we need it to be for the title.”

Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic Remake – predicted release window & what we know so far

The Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic Remake was first formally revealed to the world back in September of last year.

The reveal came as part of a PlayStation showcase that month, confirming the game would be a PlayStation 5 console exclusive. However, it will also be launching on PC as well.

Not too much was given away about the project, except for Aspyr’s intentions. “We’re rebuilding it from the ground up with the latest tech to match the groundbreaking standard of innovation established by the original, all while staying true to its revered story.”

However, the project seemingly ran into trouble earlier this year. Alas, the reports may put a dampener on those hoping for a release date any time soon.

Reportedly, trouble behind the scenes seemed to imply the project was “delayed indefinitely“. The report’s anonymous sources even claimed that though Aspyr were hoping for a 2022 release, a 2025 date was more likely.

A shift in developer would certainly indicate Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic Remake is pretty far out. Short of us hearing an announcement in the near future, we wouldn’t expect to see the game before 2024 at the earliest. We’ll update if we hear any different.
