Ubisoft’s Splinter Cell Remake has been in development since 2022. While not much is known about the upcoming return of iconic stealth game protagonist Sam Fisher, Ubisoft is still working on the long-awaited video game.

Ubisoft’s official silence on the project has not gone unnoticed by fans, but developers who have since left the project have revealed some key details about the title’s early development. Once in the works alongside a now-cancelled VR game, Ubisoft employees engaged in “retrospective” lessons about the stealth series to understand what fans loved about the now 24-year old franchise.

Ubisoft held Splinter Cell retrospective lessons

Revealed by former Splinter Cell Remake tools support specialist Wesley Chartrand, Ubisoft ran retrospective lessons for new developers working on the next game in the series.

Revealed on LinkedIn, Chartrand, who spent “two years” working on the upcoming remake, “organised and ran retrospectives for the Splinter Cell DevOps team” to better understand what made the series great.

Alongside running and organising the aforementioned retrospectives, Chartrand “served as Scrum Master on Splinter Cell, removing blockers to maintain optimal efficiency” for the “DevOps team” working on the title.

Alongside the internal retrospectives to understand the DNA of the series, Splinter Cell Remake is being spearheaded by game director Andrea Schmoll. Prior to her work at Ubisoft designing systems for Far Cry 6, the game director was a systems designer on Dishonored 2, the best modern stealth game of the last generation.

With retrospectives in place and a leader well-versed in stealth systems, Ubisoft’s return to the Splinter Cell series could be something truly great. Following the series’ rough treatment over the past decade, could we see a Sam Fisher resurgence sometime soon? Sadly, only time will tell.

The last official game in the series, Blacklist, released all the way back in 2013 to great critical reception. Since then, Ubisoft has released a number of novels and even an official radio drama starring Will Poulter, but a new mainline game hasn’t released in twelve years.
