Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2 is bringing players back to the game’s epic obelisk-turning finale with Patch 5 for a new Operation mission. However, within the files for the new update, developer Saber Interactive has accidentally revealed a new Battle Barge mechanic that will give players access to an all-new mechanic.

Space Marine 2 adding Research Challenges

Within Patch 5, players customising their hulking Space Marines discovered a new Thousand Suns Icon within the game’s Heraldry Editor. When highlighted, the locked icon informs player it can be unlocked by “completing Research Challenges in the Forces of Chaos category”.

Alongside the accidentally-released icon, its inclusion actually allows players to navigate to the unreleased Research Center on the Battle Barge. In this screen, it shows that players can earn a new form of currency that can unlock what appear to be trophies to customise your hub area or models to view in a model viewer. Of course, some customisation icons are also locked behind the system.

Multiple pages of the Research Center can be viewed, showing Tyranid and Chaos forces and their assigned trophies. It’s not known how players earn the currency to unlock these new customisation options, but they could be tied to eliminating a certain number of foes.

Currently, the Research Center has four categories: Space Marines, Imperial Guard, Tyranids and Thousand Suns Chaos Marines. While Necrons were teased in the game’s official ending, there are no signs that there will be any Necron treasures fans can unlock in this screen.

At the time of writing, players exploring the early menus have found listings for a Tyranid Hive Ship—something players can rarely get close to—as well as the ever-beautiful Ultramarines Chapter Master Calgar.

Saber Interactive and publisher Focus Home Interactive have not commented on the accidentally released system at the time of writing. However, with the massive success of the game leading to plans for more content, it seems like this is only the beginning.
