The Sony PSP will go on sale in North America on Thursday March 24th, with many stores opening at midnight in order to satisfy gamers eager to get hold of the new system. Demand is very high, with the European launch of the system being delayed so that stock in the US can meet demand.

“We have additional supplies even if the initial 1 million units are sold out on the first day,” said Nanako Kato, a spokeswoman for Sony Computer Entertainment in Tokyo.

Production of the PSP is also set to increase to 2 million units per month from the middle of the year. With the PSP set to be the must-have gadget of 2005 and a European launch still not announced, getting more units off the production line is a priority for Sony.

Check back later this week for an exclusive video feature on the PSP which takes a look at the hardware and a number of games.
